We say that we build in ‘The Habitat Way’ because work with us is more than just work and is even distinct among volunteer opportunities
elsewhere. The way we pursue our mission is just as important to us as actually accomplishing it. ‘The Habitat Way’ has a variety of meanings in
practice.
It means that we will move forward ambitiously while taking care to make our work a community endeavor, realizing that each person has unique
gifts to offer. It means that we will do our work with excellence while accepting the contributions of the unskilled, understanding the potential each
person has to become a champion of our work. It means that we will perform mundane tasks while aware of their connection to a higher purpose. It
means, above all, that we are not just members of a construction company. We are participants in the holy work of making decent shelter a matter
of conscience.
Our volunteer opportunities include:
Construction. Hammer-swinging has emerged as the quintessential
volunteer experience with us. Volunteers and partner families build all Habitat
homes according to the highest standards. One special build is the Apostles
Build, an opportunity for 12 faith communities to partner together to provide the
funds and volunteers for an entire home.
Another wonderful opportunity for involvement is the
Women Build, a home constructed predominantly through the efforts of women.
ReStore. Habitat operates a store which receives donations of
house hold items and new and gently used building materials.
We sell the items at a discount rate and apply all profits to cover
the overhead of our organization. This means volunteers are
heavily involved here, and every hour worked helps more
families find their way into decent, affordable housing.
Family Services. There are two main ways to get involved
with serving our partner families.
The Family Selection Committee reviews applications for
homeownership and chooses potential families best suited for
our housing program.
Family Advocates provide support to the families who are in
transition to home ownership. Advocating begins when the
family is selected for a Habitat house, and continues through
the construction of their home and for one year after the family
has moved into their home.
Committee Participation. As many
people know, for every person in the
spotlight there are several more
behind the scenes laying the
groundwork that makes everything
possible. Several committees,
including the Board of Directors, are
composed of volunteers and welcome
the contributions of new members. The
Church Relations Committee strives to
build partnerships with local faith
groups, offering congregations
another opportunity to look outside the
walls of their churches and put their
faith into action. The Resource
Development Committee engages in a
number of development activities to
increase the amount of financial
support Habitat receives from the
community. The Women Build
Committee coordinates the annual
Women Build through fundraising,
media relations and volunteer
recruitment.
Office Support.
Whether designing
publications, entering
data, folding newsletters,
addressing envelopes, or
filing sundry items, office
volunteers provide vital
assistance in making the
management of Habitat
programs effective. The
tasks to be done are as
varied as the organization
is dynamic.
